Keeping the family legacy alive, one generation at a time.
Today was more than just a gathering.
It was a gathering of family, memories and generations cousins, spouses and children from my late mother’s side of the family, fondly known as “Cucu Tok Wan Omar dan Nik Zainab.”
Our grandparents may no longer be with us, but their legacy continues to live on through their grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the generations that will follow.
That, perhaps, is one of the most beautiful things about family. Our grandparents may have left us, but their legacy do not.
When we were young, many of us probably never thought much about the importance of these gatherings. Our parents and elders were still around. There were always aunties, uncles, cousins and grandparents at the next gathering. We simply assumed it would always be that way.
But life moves on.
One by one, our parents and the older generation have left us. And somewhere along the way, we realised that we had become the seniors of the family ourselves.
We now have children. Many of us have grandchildren.
And suddenly, we find ourselves telling the younger generation stories about people they may never have had the opportunity to know our parents, grandparents and the generations before them.
It is a humbling realisation.
Today’s gathering represents only a small fraction not even a quarter of my cousins on my mother's side. Our extended family on both my mum and dad's side is much larger, and unfortunately it is impossible to have everyone together at the same time.
For this post, I am therefore mentioning mainly my cousins and siblings who were present. It is certainly not because the others are forgotten - quite the opposite. There are simply too many names, and I would surely risk missing someone. So let me apologize in advance if I missed any of them.

Looking around the table today, I could not help but think about how much has changed since the days of our parents. The children who once ran around during family gatherings are now parents and grandparents themselves.
The young cousins have grown older. The elders have become memories.
And yet, here we are still gathering, still laughing, still sharing stories, still calling one another by the familiar names we have carried since childhood.
That is what makes family special. We are not merely related by blood. We are connected by a shared history.
Our responsibility now is to ensure that this history does not disappear with us.
Let our children and grandchildren know where they came from, who their ancestors were, the stories of Tok Wan Omar and Nik Zainab, and the values that shaped the generations before them.
Because one day, we too will become part of their memories.
And when that day comes, I hope they will gather as we did today and say:
“This is where our family came from. These were the people who came before us. And this is the legacy they left behind.”
May Allah preserve our family bonds, keep our hearts close despite the distances between us, bless those who are still with us, and grant our departed parents, grandparents and elders the highest place among the righteous.
From our grandparents, the family tree continues to grow.
And today, we are not merely remembering the past. We are becoming the bridge between the past and the generations yet to come.
