I’ve noticed how many people charge their phones by switching on the electrical power first, then plugging in the charger and connecting the cable. That is not a good electrical safety practice, particularly when plugs, sockets or chargers may be faulty.
A safer sequence is:
- Check the correct voltage-rated charger and socket.
- Plug the charger into the socket.
- Connect the charging cable.
- Connect the cable to the phone.
- Only then switch on the electrical power.
In Malaysia, household supply is normally 230V AC, 50Hz. Always ensure your charger is properly rated for the supply.
But there is another lesson here.
The way a person performs a simple task often reflects their attitude towards work. Are they the “hurry up, as long as it works, it’s alright” type?
Think of the old Local Area Network (LAN) - work can be organised in serial or parallel modes. But when the task involves danger, hazards or electrical safety, you should never simply work according to whatever feels most convenient.
If someone repeatedly ignores the safe procedure, I would ask:
- Was the person never properly trained?
- Do they have the SOP but don't understand it?
- Or, frankly, do they simply not bother?
Safety is not about doing things the quickest way.
Safety is about doing things the right way - every time.
