THE PROPER WAY TO ENGAGE IN DISCUSSION AND ARGUMENT

The proper way to engage in discussion and argument, whether from a religious or intellectual standpoint rests on the same foundation:

to seek truth, not victory.
The difference lies only in the sources of reference and the greater emphasis on manners in religious discourse. 1. Intention: Seek Truth, Not Triumph In Islam, this principle is clear. The Qur’an calls for دعوت (inviting others) with wisdom and gracious counsel. Meaning: - Do not enter a discussion to “bring others down” - Do not use arguments as tools of ego - Focus on what is true, even if you are not the one proven right 2. Character Over Content Scholars such as Imam Al-Ghazali emphasized that proper conduct in debate outweighs mere intellectual sharpness. Examples of good conduct: - Do not interrupt - Do not raise your voice unnecessarily - Do not belittle others - Use language that is courteous and clear 3. Distinguish Between Discussion and Argument (Quarrel) Many confuse the two: Discussion = exchange of views to understand Argument (quarrel) = attempt to win When emotions begin to rise, it is no longer a discussion, it becomes contention. 4. Base Arguments on Evidence and Proof In knowledge: - Use data, research, and evidence even "dalil" - Avoid “I feel” or “people say” In religion: - Refer to the Qur’an and Hadith - Understand context, do not quote selectively A key principle: Argument without proof = opinion Argument with proof = knowledge 5. Understand Before Responding Many reply without truly understanding. The proper way: - Listen fully - Ask questions if unclear - Restate the other person’s point to confirm understanding This is known today as active listening. 6. Avoid Logical Fallacies In reasoning, many errors arise from: - Ad hominem: attacking the person, not the argument - Strawman: misrepresenting the opponent’s position - Appeal to emotion: relying on feelings rather than facts A sound argument addresses the issue, not the individual. 7. Accept the Possibility of Being Wrong This is the most difficult, yet the most important. A person of knowledge: - Is not afraid to admit error - Is willing to change position when stronger evidence appears In the tradition of the scholars: “My view is correct, though it may be wrong. Your view is wrong, though it may be correct.” (And that which is stronger in evidence is to be preferred, even if both hold weight.) 8. Know When to Stop Not every discussion must continue. Stop when: It turns emotional - The other party refuses to listen - There is no longer any benefit In Summary The right way to engage in discussion: - Set the right intention (niyyah) - Uphold good conduct - Use facts and evidence - Listen before responding - Seek truth, not ego
A discussion grounded in sincerity and wisdom does not merely exchange words, it illuminates hearts and minds.

AN OLD MAN DEFENDING OLD TREES AT SRI GOMBAK AND THE SURROUNDING AREA

Despite being a Kelantanese, I have lived in Sri Gombak since the early 90s (although have always been here since 80s during school holidays where many of my siblings living around the area)

Since 2001–2012, I stood firm in defending the old shady trees (and green lungs) in Taman Sri Gombak, many over 50 years old, some even older. The common justification for felling them was safety, broken branches posing risks to motorists and pedestrians. But my position has always been simple, if a branch is the issue, prune it, don’t destroy the entire tree.

While we focus heavily on measures like charging 20 sen for plastic bags, believing it helps protect the environment from long-term soil damage, we often overlook a far more immediate and visible impact, the felling of mature trees.

Unfortunately, many of these trees were replaced with smaller species that provide little shade, offering no real protection from the increasing heat. I was often ridiculed for speaking up, perhaps by those who did not fully realise that the environmental consequences we create today will be inherited by our children and grandchildren.

My concern has never been sentimental alone, it is grounded on fact. Mature trees stabilise soil, regulate urban temperatures, support biodiversity, and produce the oxygen we depend on. Removing them without thoughtful planning accelerates environmental degradation and contributes to the very heat we now struggle to endure.

Yes, I understand that felled trees may be repurposed, the timber used, the roots turned into decorative pieces. I have no issue with that. But the real loss is not in the wood, it is in the ecosystem that took decades to grow.

I’ve seen better practices in places like Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, and Kuala Lumpur, where mature trees are preserved, maintained properly, and even protected during infrastructure development. Some regions go further, imposing heavy penalties for unnecessary tree felling.

What I see now is rapid development in many areas in Sri Gombak and Prima Sri Gombak replacing the very shady trees and “green lungs” that once sustained our surroundings.

I haven't really stopped fighting only mellow down a bit as age catching up with me. I now find myself watching the remaining green lungs and old shady trees around Pinggiran Batu Caves and can’t help but wonder how long they will last. It feels like only a matter of time before someone proposes development, and these mature trees, standing for decades are marked for removal.

This is not just about trees or green lungs. It is about responsibility, foresight, and the legacy we leave behind.

Adequate Procedures Compliance (Checklist) Workshop

Attended the "Adequate Procedures Compliance (Checklist)" session with ABAC Center of Excellence Limited (Certification Body) and on behalf of QHSEL Consultancy Sdn. Bhd.


The workshop was highly value-adding, providing a strong complement to the ABMS ISO 37001 framework, which is now (2026) mandatory for certain categories of companies, corporate sectors, GLCs, and segments of the civil service, while also serving as a practical guideline for other organisations aiming to enhance their governance and anti-corruption practices.





APCC relates to the anti-corruption measures that Malaysian commercial organisations are required to implement under Section 17A of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009. Guided by the “T.R.U.S.T” principles (Top-level commitment, Risk assessment, Undertake control measures, Systematic review, and Training) these procedures form an important legal defence mechanism against bribery.

The session was both insightful and productive, with participants comprising corporate entities at various stages those preparing for certification, in the process of implementation, and those already certified. The (invite-only) programme was organised by Transparency International-Malaysia, an organisation well-recognised for its work in promoting integrity and accountability internationally.




My appreciation to all the speakers including The President of TI Malaysia, Mr. Raymon Ram, many of whom are also experienced assessors and legal practitioners, for their valuable insights. 1. WHY EPCC?

An EPCC model ensures end-to-end accountability from concept design to final commissioning. In oil and gas environments, where risks are high and margins for error are low, EPCC helps to:

1.1 Incorporate Safety into Design From Day 1 - This is not a slogan. It is a structured process embedded in engineering workflows.

Key Practices : Hazard Identification and Risk Studies,

  • Conduct HAZID (Hazard Identification) during concept stage

  • Follow with HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study) for detailed design

  • Include QRA (Quantitative Risk Assessment) for facilities near process plants

Example: If the office is within a refinery perimeter, QRA may dictate:

  • Minimum safe separation distance (e.g. 150–300 m from hydrocarbon units)

b. Blast-Resistant and Fire-Safe Design - Design in accordance with relevant API and ISO Standards/Guidelines

Corrosion is not cosmetic, it is a structural and safety risk.

Fire-rated assemblies, explosion-proof fittings, and well-planned evacuation routes are not optional, they are baseline requirements.
